Power Steering Question?
« on: Jan 29, 2006, 08:43:19 PM »
I'll soon be starting the cross over steering conversion on my 1983 Truck.  I can't seem to remember if I need a new crank pulley to install the power steering pump or not.  My truck does not have power steering and the truck I scavenged the pump from (1985 Truck) did not have the crank pulley.  Can someone clarify if I need a 3 groove pulley or not.  Also, somewhere out there in cyberspace, someone posted a diagram of the power steering system for a solid axle truck, if anyone knows where that is can you post it or email it to me?  It would be dearly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

Does someone have a truck with power steering that they can just look at the crank pulley or just tell me what belt your power steering pump is ran off of?

Thanks

I'll see if it will let me attach pics today.  This is on my 80 so yours should be the same.

Thinking back it seems like you can just get the outer groove pulley and put it on your 2 groove pulley.  Yea, I know it's greasy but it'll hopefully get a teardown this spring.

The power steering pulley bolts onto the front of the existing crank pulley, making it a 3 groove pulley. You can buy it new from Toyota or try here or on pirate for a used one.

That's kinda what I was remembering too.  It's been a while since I've done any tearing down on these things so it's not too fresh, but it did seem that last time I did a front main seal it came apart in 2 pieces.

Mine is an 83 as well, and did accept the bolt on pulley.

My truck is an 80, but has an 81 block, and if memory serves me then I just pulled the add on from the 80 and it bolted right on.

 Thanks all for the info.  If anyone has one of these laying around I would be more than happy to purchase it from you.  In the mean time I'll keep looking here and some of the other forums and boneyards before I head over to the stealership.

Thanks again.
