broken and fragmenting valve adjusters
« on: Jul 10, 2003, 05:10:48 PM »
well i was on my way to work monday, and noticed some valve rattle :hammer: when i stopped to pickup one of the guys, no biggy i thought,  then about 20 miles up the highway,  it starts smoking :eek:my concern escalates :nerv:  by the time we get to the jobsite the truck is smoking so bad we are cloaked by a cloud :rivers:
so that evening i limp home, pull the valve cover and here i see valve adjuster pieces, fragments  :eek:have found there way into the valve guides,  number 4 exhaust can move side to side a good 1/8 inch with the spring still on :rivers: :rivers: :rivers: :rivers:
so today i go to my machine shop,  show them whats left of the adjusters they supplied,  so luckily they are going to rebuild my head free of charge,  has anyone else had this trouble,   what did you do to solve this?????????

well,  when i went to pick my head up, i got a little peaved :maddest: that i had to fork over $50,  but i guess thats not too bad for 8 new valves and 8 new valve guides,  when i pulled the pan for inspection i found all my old valve seals,  and my oil filter was completely clogged with little shavings :rivers:i inspected the rod and main bearings, they showed some signs of wear but runnable.  no pits :beerchug:so i changed the oil and filter, started the motor, ran it about 5 minutes changed the filter again,.  drove it up the roadand back changed the oil and filter one more time.  then :smack:fan belt starts to squeal,  :headscratch:i'm like, what now :ack:,  luckily i found it befor it could cause a problem, :confounded: but apparently the new water pump i got at O'Reilly's only a couple of months ago was bad :hammer: ???
i did take this opportunity to install new 22R rockers and new oem toyota adjusters, and an underdrive starter :driving:

trd roller rockers :smack:if only i had known, nope these are stock rockers for a 86 22R  :dunno:

i picked up the under drive used,  it came off a 86 pickup , my buddy went to have his 86 rebuilt , had new head components already ordered when he decided to go with a complete head from LC.

so i grabbed his rockers,  he didnt like the noise the underdrive made so i snagged it too :beerchug:

because of the gear reduction in the starter assbly, it takes less amps to turn the engine,  with engines like mine running higher than stock compression, its practically a must have

I want to get a super powerful starter so it cranks really fast and fires right up. It would sound impressive.
