What do you have? Is it have crawler gears, what about the lift? Is it IFS? How about high steer?

I think you should re consider the paint job and use the money where its really needed.

1K is a bit slim for a SAS. I think for the $ the best thing to do is a good locker.

dont paint it its a waste. i got mine painted for free since i got rear ended by a semi and they payed for it all, but i wish it hadnt got it painted, and just rattle canned it. i cant bring my self to wheel it like i used to. its a lot funner to wheel something you dont worry about scratching ruining the paint. im way to anal now when i take it out and i dont enjoy it as much. thats just me though. i know something will eventually happen to make it where i dont care any more, but that hasnt happend yet.

put your paint money into something more useful, i dont know how much your spending but mine was $3500 and i would have much rather spent it on sas, duals and other useful stuff. i didnt get the choice though.

Rattle can it!!!!  and Brainless, I am on a mission to do the SAS for under 1k   I'll keep ya'll posted.  I'd try the sas right off, I did a little crawlin with IFS, and to hit the rocks, you really need a solid axle IMO

I'd say SAS.
Marlin's hy-steer kit----$449
Toy front axle------$200
Rears up front for springs-----$50 at most
Steel for brackets/hanger---$50
Shocks---$100

$849 seems to fit your budget.

Thanks Ya'll

Sorry, but maybe I should explain what I am going to use my truck for.

Seeing as I live in Rutherford County there is nowhere within 300 miles of where I live to go rock crawlin that I know of.

My truck will see a good bit of mud though.

Could I get some suggestions about what to do to my truck to get it ready for the mud?

Thanks and heres to everyone who has already helped me.

Oh yeah, my paint job is free because my Uncle owns a body shop and I'm painting it myself.  (Black)

For the mud:

Get a new O-ring for the distributor cap, and keep a can of wd-40 in your truck.

Hey thanks Uncle Jesse

I have one more question to ask before I start work on my truck.

What about tires?

I don't have the money to get a suspension lift and I've just heard bad things about body lifts.

So I'm looking for a good set of 31x11.5x16 tires and I'll be set.

Are TSL Thornbirds any good?

whatever you do, dont buy thornbirds unless you just want to play in the sand.  they are a junk tire that just looks cool.  they especially suck in the mud because they pack with mud in like 5 seconds and then its all over.  go with a cheap swamper, maybe the ltb, it all depends on how often youll be on the road though.

well if your gonna be driving this on the road then I would say go with the thornbirds,I've seen them do alright in the mud,as long as you air down you should have no problem.also they dont wear out as easy on the road.or you can do like "yoda4x" said and go with the LTB ,theyre alright too.well good luck

After much deliberation and preparation I have made my choice.  But...I cannot size my pictures down to fit them on here.  but you pretty much take my truck and paint it jet black with a silver pinstripe. put these rims and tires and a cb antenna and wala.

I think in the long run you will regret the thornbirds unless you drive over 1500 miles a month, theyre just nice looking street tires.

he wants a mud truck... do not get the thornbirds, they suck is all conditions except looks......

i say make sure you have the gearing to spind biger tires.... trim the fenders, put on the biggest tires you can..... mud is relatively straight runs, so a little rub in turns will be ok....

there is nothing wrong with a bodylift. several people here run them, i have one myself, and have personally put it through hell, and it has never shown any problems

oh then disreguard my last post i didnt read the whole thread and i didnt know he wanted a mud truck. I would go with an aussie in the rear and the front and some bigger tires. if you go 33's or 34's i would go with some 4.88's and if you go with bigger tires you will want some 5.29's. just remember that.

amen, i have jumped my truck with my 3 inch body lift on multiple occasions, (most times not so on purpose) and its still holding up fine

although it is coming off when i do my SAS,   in my oppinion a body lift is a good way to fit bigger tires when on a  tight budget.
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.

or when all other possibilities have been exhuasted... my truck is lifted as far as its current design can allow.... the next step is longtravel or going to do a SAS and 4x4 swap.....

The first thing I did to my truck before I even took it off road was a downey truss...if you plan on getting the truck airborne at all; cheap and simple mod worth it to keep your frame from spreading w/IFS. ive heard that the thornbirds get unbalanced easily once they get chunked up :yesnod:

If you want to do awsome in mud get TSL Boggers.
Either that or run swamper LTB's
Get a 3" body-lift get some cheap 15x8 white spoke steel wheels then put on some 33x13.50 LTB's
You can get a tire and wheel package under $900 from 4wheelparts. Then there is $100 left for a 3" body lift.
If you need more traction pull the 3rd have someone weld the rear spiders.

Do Not I repeat Do Not buy Thornturds................. You will regret it....

Hmmm the Thornbirds I had on my 84 truck worked great for me, in fact there is a long steep hill behind Silverwood Lake in SBF that I could never seem to climb until I put Thornbirds on my truck, and a single side lug can hold the whole rig on its own. They also worked excellent in mud and even better in snow.

mud truck...  hmmm $1K...

4- Super Swamper Boggers (31x12.50x15) @ $187              $748
boggers because the truck needs to rule in the mud.  31s because regearing is too expensive at this point.  You might need to scrounge some rims, but I'll leave that up to you.  You could probably fit 33 in boggers, but you'd have a hard time turning them with the 4.10s.  Substitute BFG 33x10.50x15 or 32x11.50 muds if you need to use the stock rims, and if the truck must also endure a lot of daily driving duties.

1- Flex-a-Lite Black Magic electric fan kit @ $100
Being able to shut off your fan is mandatory if mud is your thing, to keep it from eating your radiator.  You may also see some power gains by taking the fan clutch off the front of the motor.

1- Aussie Locker  ~ $250
Relaible traction, need I say more.  Could substitute with a welded diff if it's practical for you.  The aussie is easy to install (as in you don't have to setup the gears).

There it is, boggers, an electric fan, and a nice locker.  That ought to get you started for $1098.

Post up pics once you decide what to do.

Quote
But...I cannot size my pictures down to fit them on here.
to resize pictures...
1) open pictures in Paint.
2) click image
3) click stretch/skew..
4) enter a number less than 100 in the horizontal and vertical dialog boxes.
5) click ok
6) save the image as a .jpg
7) check the size 'must be less than 90KB'
8) resize as neccessary and post 'em up on the board for the whole world to see!

If you are really feeling set on the thornbirds, I hear that if you carve bigger gaps between the lugs, the tires work a little better.
