Need help before I hack it up!!
« on: Dec 21, 2005, 11:15:49 PM »
OK, I bought my 3rd Toyota today.....an 83 SR5 shortbed.  It should by all means have a 5 spd in it....but it don't as far as I can tell cause there sure ain't no 5th gear up there!

Anyway I am wanting to put the dual case adapter in it and talked to Dean today here at Marlin and told him my deal.  I have read that the 4 spd is worthless (it is not the funky side shift one either) but he said run it with my top shift case as the 'crawl box' and then find a 85-95 EFI top shift case for the back one.  I am not doubting him just wanted to see some other opinions on the 4 spd tranny.

If you say to upgrade to a 5 spd should I just try to find a W56 and completely bypass the L & G series?  Trying to keep this cheap but something that I am not gonna have to replace soon.  BTW, it will be turning 60/14 bolt w/40's.

Desperately need some advice here!  thanks in advance.

look under the hood on the inside of the right fender , there is a tag  it should have all thew trucks specs there,  axle code,  G292,  L50, L52  are 5 speeds,  L45  is the best 4 speed

if your tranny is the all cast iron L45-52  you have a strong case,   and the only difference between the L45 and the L50  is a 5th gear

the 45  is a LOT stronger than the alum bell hoising side shifting L43
