Solid Front Axle Specs
« on: Nov 23, 2005, 08:29:08 PM »
I got a sweet homework assignment.  I am looking for information on Toyota's solid front axle.  I have a presentation to give for my Power Transmission class on Monday and I am looking for specs like drive ratio, load capacity, weight, steering angle, brake capability, size, etc.  I would also like to include how Toyota improved the axle over the years it included them in their trucks.  If you know of any websites with good info or have personal knowledge and experience, please share.  Thanks!

The axle stayed completely the same from start to finish except in 84-85 they added an extra truss to the top.

they never added a truss to the top, in '79-80 there was no truss, '81-83 there was a truss on the bottom going about halfway across the long side, and '84-85 the truss ran all the way to the spring perch.  no huge difference in strength when you take it over a dune, but a lot of guys seem to think it makes them more valuable.

the front end is 55" WMS, and in the US it came geared with 3.90, 4.10, 4.11, 4.30 and 4.375 gears over the span of 1979-1985.  diff came as an 8" ring gear, 2 pinion, 1 piece carrier.  shafts are 1.3" diameter 30 spline.  closed knuckle, with birfield joints.  brakes were solid rotors(not sure on diameter) with fixed 4 piston calipers.

Yeah and they really improved them when they switched to IFS in 86!   :smack:
