Newby from Brazil
« on: Nov 13, 2005, 07:08:10 AM »
Hello Everyone

My name is José Manuel I am Venezuelan leaving in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil since 2000.
:best:I am the proud owner of a 1993 Toyota Hilux dual cab know around here as "Burrita" that is Spanish for little donkey or mule. This is a japanese made truck since the Hilux was not built locally (Argentina) until 1995 when it went to IFS.
Her specs:

  • 2.8L Diesel engine, loads of torque in low RPMs
  • solid axle front and rear
  • G52 transmission
  • 31x10.5 r15 Pirelli Scorpion Muds
  • 15x8 Mangels directional steel wheels
  • Custom made snorkel
  • Custom made rear bumper
  • 2'lift shackles
  • Uniden Grant LT CB

Her are some pics

I have been looking long and hard for a place were yotas are the main topic of discussion and though I have found a few this one is by far the best. The buildups are great and have loads of technical information which is what I am looking for.

I have been playing with the idea of a suspension lift, but not just a lift, a lift that would give me more articulation which is my main goal. I have researched for a long time and so far I found that the trail flex kit from Marlin, and the All pro off road kits to be the most complete and the only ones that deliver the promised articulation that I am looking for.
However, there are a couple of details for which I have not found precise information even after searching the topics in this list.
:help: With regards to these 2 lift kits that seem to be very similar. What are other items will need attention installing this lift? Will I have to do some work on the driveshafts? if so what needs to be done? It seems to me that with the added articulation the slip in the stock drive shat will not be enough. what about the center bearing in the rear driveshaft? will it have to go? What are recommendations for tire size and gearing? I thinking of 33'for this build. What can I expect in terms of handling on road? I have heard that lifted trucks have serious problems with handling on road and alignment issues.

This kits are not plug and play kits, and not cheap, so I very much need to know what to expect, and what additional work I will have to do on top of installing the kit.
I am quite handy with tools and have all the needed ones to install this lift without having any problems...I hope... :crossed:

Thanks for your help

Does that look like a 1st gen bed on a 3rd gen cab to anyone else...?

 :welcome:
Yes, you'd need to do new driveshafts.  Most folks go to the one piece shaft in the rear.  For 33's, you'd want 4.56s or 4.88s for gears.  Other than that, I think you'd want to brace the frame at the steering box.  Hopefully someone with the SA lift will jump on here and tell you about ride quality.  Of the lifted rigs that I've ridden in and driven, the handling is just different, and the trade off with the commercial kits are not that bad.

sweet truck!
