22RE need help?
« on: Dec 27, 2006, 03:29:15 PM »
I recently had a thormastate go out which resulted in a head gasket failure. I got my head re-done with new valves and seal's. I replaced timing chain and gears, camshaft, and of course all other seals. Truck has 175k miles. It ran bad before this project, wich i figured was an old chain. After putting it back together I found I still had problems with power, and running smothly. I replaced a number of sensors which had failed, including throttle position sensor, mass air flow sensor, and engine coolant temp senser,(for computer not gauge). I also had a clogged catilitic converter, and a fuel pump that would not build high pressure. I have fixed all of these problems, and I am truly amazed it even ran like this. My problem now is it will start and run pretty good, but still lacks power. When it reaches normal operating temp it will not idle, it will just studder and die. I have also noticed that exaust manifold gets way to hot.  Has anyone had this kind of problem? Help please?

Whats your ignition timing runnin at? Might be pretty advanced if your manifold is glowin red. Is there any air trapped in the cooling system,an air pocket up by the water neck will cause a rough idle and irratic running issues if the coolant temp sensor doesnt read any coolant, most 22re engines wont even idle like this.  Mike

timing advance is at 5 degrees. there is no air trapped in water neck.

Make sure you do not have any exhaust leaks at the exhaust mainafold that could throw off the O2 sensor.

Does your egr valve get hot right away? It sounds like it may be stuck open.

I do have a leak below manifold but before O2 senser, does anyone know a good place to buy exhausts? or just a new down pipe?

I can start up the ol girl and she runs great no misses, very responsive. she sounds better than ever.  :suprised:
I checked to see if egr got hot like Marlin said, and it does not.  :headscratch:

Exhaust starts to heat up quickly, and if i would alow would get red hot. As soon as she hits normal operating temp, she wont idle at all, but will start agiain fine. I have to keep foot on gas or she will studder and die. Still no power. I cant figure this one out please help?  :nope:

P.S. idle speed screw is turned OUT/open about 2-4 turns from what it used to be, idleing at about 1k
