I would think he means Doug Thorley.  No, there should be no reason to have to pull the engine mount loose.  Just bolt 'er up, and mind the center stud(if 22r), if you want to put a nut on it, put a washer behind the header, or it will pull the flange back too far and not seal.

When I installed mine in a '81 with 22r I had to bend a heat shield for a brake line.  The heat shield/piece of sheet metal was attached to the frame rail and got in the way of the header sliding in place.  What problems are you having with the install?

Ok got the header installed and it leaks?I have a couple questions. My exhaust manifold was missing the rear bottom bolt(under the master cylinder) and I went to a friends house to look at both of his 4 runners and neither one of them had a rear bottom bolt?I do need this right? So I went to napa and got a replacment bolt.
Put the header on per instructions even put hi temp rtv on the gasket like the instructions said.Had a hell of a time getting the bolts in the smog tube to line up.And it still leaks. And Ideals? And the bottom two middle bolts have a hole between them and when running air comes out of it?My stock manifold was solid between these bolts?.The hole is not threaded so do i need to make a block off plate for this?
So my questions are,
1 Do i need the bottom rear bolt?
2 What about the hole between the bottom middle bolts?Block off plate?
3 What is the best kind and place to buy a new gasket for the header and collecter?
4 Any ideals on how to do this right where it dosen't leak this time?

1 yes and a good gasket I've had good experience with felpro
2 that hole is there in case you have one of the toy heads that require that hole instead of the two to each side of it. If air is coming from       that hole its a good bet your gasket is not sealing
3 I'm not shure if a local parts store will have them or not, but the Advanced Auto Parts store here carries copper gaskets that I like to use.
4 After taking care of 1-3 you should be doing good.

Is the header contacting the block (usually near the bell housing) - if no - it just plain wont fit.

Also - connecte the header to the block and THEN connect the cat to the header.

Trick on the EGR cross over - cut the studs off where te cross over connects to the pipe behind the head, and then drill and tap the stud remainder and use bolts to hold the EGR cross over in place. This allows ya to get everything in place easier.

Also - use an OEM gasket. Cut off the heat shield if you have to on the DT. The LC ones allows use of the OEM gasket.
yeah yeah - still IFS...

OK after the hole between the bottom bolts kept blowing exhaust,I called summit racing. And guess what wrong header for my 4 runner. So the tech guy at summit called DT.And they said the only difference in that header and the one I have is the hole in the flange between the bottom bolts. So they told me to remove the header and Tap that hole in the head and put a threaded plug in.Also they are sending me a new gasket set for it free.
Sound like it will work? The header fits perfect except for the leak.

Mine fit great, no leaks, cleared all stock heat shields, even covered up the egr holes so I didn't have to make block off plates for them. No complaints here. I'm sure a downey or lc header would be better, but for half the cost I'll take my Thorley any day. And to make sure I was getting the header that would fit my truck, I just called them. Ordering online is nice, but there's something reassuring about the voice on the other end of the line.  :twocents:

I installed the same header about 3 weeks ago on my 87 4 runner. I had the same leak between the two center bolts. I called summit and there tech advise was not to much help, however I discovered that that center whole was actually threaded and just tightened a bolt into it and there was no leak! good luck!

Had this happen on a VW Golf I was working on.
Studs hit the heat sheild so I pulled em.

Turns out the holes go all the way through.

I think that the middle threaded hole is desinged for a stud? Anywya - run a stud or a bolt through it (check it with a tap) and ya should be good to go.
