Front Axle Build
« on: Aug 29, 2005, 01:25:07 AM »
ok while i still have the toyota i am planning on building a fairly strong front end and just want to make sure i hit all the weak spots. I would go with a new one-off housing (diamond or FROR) but this is temporary.
Plan:
30 Spline Longfield Axles
Marlin Drive Flanges
Left and right side of 3rd gusseted all the way to the spring perches
Balls gusseted top and bottem
Steering stops gusseted
Locker
I know the brakes are still gonna suck, but this is a temporary fix until the buggy is in the works with 60's Thanks

Yup my brakes fully kick ass especially considering my rig typically hits the scales at minimum 4200 lbs and Im running 38" sx's on heavy beadlocks.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

my other hobby is driving "fast" cars so i can feel brake fade right away, and with not vented and non non-drilled rotors brake fade happens right away. They don't suck they just fade quickly...

If your running stock rotors no wonder.  The solid rotors hold the heat, Im running vented and although they arent crossdrilled or milled for venting they did make a huge improvement in resisting fade.

Fade schmade, who needs brakes.  Just learn to swerve.  Much easier on the brakes and fun too.  :)

After all those fancy parts, I wouldn't mess with the 60, unless you want the width.  Switch over to vented rotors and IFS calipers and your brakes will be adequate for sure.  They won't be 8 pot carbon/carbon Brembos, but they'll stop your junk safe  :eyebrow:

BTW-- I love the Wilwoods on my Supra....

I may stay with a toy axle in the buggy if i can build it to hold together.
BTW: yes having 16 Brembo pistons pressing on 13.5" cross-drilled and slotted rotors will bring my WRX to a stop real quick.

Oh with the right parts and the right money it will hold! But hey fullwidth is cool on a buggy.

full width in the northwest isn't cool on a buggy all the front axles up here get cut down, usually have 73" outside tire - outside tire. gotta fit in between the trees somehow.

ah I see, yeah I imagine that would be in issue. Then what the hell, just stay with the yota axle. Thats bout the only reason to go fullwidths is for the width, plus with 30 chromo longs they are stronger than a 60. Do it, just do it!
