Newbie ready to build
« on: Aug 03, 2005, 12:16:02 AM »
Just checkin in.  Just bought an 85 Toy 4x4 carbed for $100.  No rust on frame and I scored on a sunroof  :clap2: The truck runs and 4 wheel drive works great.  But the engine has a pinging noise.  Buddy says either rebuild it or get a new engine.  Doing some homework before deciding on what to get for my build up.  I'll be reading the forums for the next several weeks.  I really wanna go big on this one.

Currently own a FJ80 on 40's.  Switchin over to a mini so I can take on some of the harder trails in CO and not worry about rollin it all the time.  The new toy will be a trailer vehicle.  Plan on tubing the whole thing buggy style, bed is definately going.  Still not sure what axles to put under it.  Suggestions are always welcome.  I would like wider than stock axle widths and want to run 37-39's.  HP60's seem to be the choice for this type of build up.  But what axles should I look for?  For years the only thing I have known is Toy axles so it's gonna be hard to go to the dark side!!   :disturbed:

Should I stick with this 22R and upgrade to EFI or just get a whole new engine with EFI altogether?  I've got around 10k to spend initially.

Look into BigMikes 3RZ conversion. With some dealing I bet you could get one from a junkyard at a decent price. Pretty straight forward swap, especially since Mike is working on swap #3 now, he knows what kind of bugs that you will run into. As for axles, your on the right track. D60's would be the way to go. Give CrawlerDan a hollar, he manages a wrecking yard and has the hook up on axles. I sure wish I had 10k chillin in my wallet. Use it wisely and build one hell of a rig. Make sure you post the build up so all of us can drool and dream. Oh yeah :welcome:

i've look at your website before. i love the 80. i would either drop a big block in or stick to just an 22re. if you wanna go that route i have a buddy that has a 22re out of a celica that he's not using.
is it bad when you unplug the power wire from your stereo and it still plays

Thanks everyone for the welcome!  I'm pretty excited about this build up.  I contacted Crawler Dan about the axles to so hopefully he'll chime in with a response and suggestions.

I've been on your site a few times before (have to get a wheelin movie fix every now and then).  I like what you did with the cruiser.  How are the toyota axle and longs holding up to the 40s?

I second the 3rz, but I'm rooting for a 80-series land cruiser front e-locker axle and a Tacoma e-locker rear axle.  10k....  :yikes:
