How to check to see if a motor is hydro'ed?
« on: Aug 16, 2005, 11:03:34 AM »
Anybody know how to check to see if a motor is hydro'ed?  It's an 84 4Runner with probably 200K on the clock.   We haven't tried to turn the motor over yet since the guy I bought it from said it runs barely and really rough. I didn't really want to ruin anything like the crank if it was hydro'ed.

I pulled the dipstick and the oil was black but no signs of water. My dad and I pulled the first spark plug and it looked great as well. The coolant looks fine, nice and green, in the raditor. Any ideas???

Pull all sparkplugs and crank the thing and water will pump out the plug hole.

If this thing has been sitting outside in 100 degree weather since I bought it at the end of June, will the water still be inside the engine?  Can it be evaporated just sitting there?  I plan on pulling the plugs and cranking but haven't gotten the chance to work on it yet.  Stupid landscaping my backyard taking all my time  :screwy:

The plugs wil tell the story pretty well.  If there is/has been much water int he cylinders you should be able to tell pretty easily.  While the plugs are out Id do a compression test.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

What would the plugs look like if it was hydro-locked?  The plugs looked great, light grey even coating.

Dripping wet.

and since you left it that way a little rusty too, along with the rings, piston, etc, etc. That is if it didn't leak down into the oil-pan.

Don't forget to ground the coil wire when you're cranking it over.....ask me how I know!!!!!!!(did it right in front of a customer, shirt ablaze)
RIP KYOTA

You can go through life being scared of the possible, or you can have a little fun and tease the inevitable.

Give a man venison, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to hunt Blacktail, he'll be frustrated for life!
