Topic: decisions decisions 82 or 89 pickup?

ok heres my problem i bought a 82 solid axle 4wd pickup with a long bed in may of 2004 i basicly rebuilt the truck new tranny brakes rotors calipers carb and had the valves adjusted and a new heater core 2.5 inch exhaust all the way back and all new hoses and some little stuff it has no power steering and it idles a lil ruf but that dont bother me and has a/c but it doesnt work and the truck has 165,000 miles on it now my dad has got a 89 toyota 4wd standard cab with a short bed that i could buy with power steering and air and fuel injected but it has 264,00 miles this scares me a lil and i dont know how it was treated before we recieved it im looking it over later today the lack of power steering and air dont bother me in my 82 pickup but it does have a lil less power than the 89 i guess my question should be which is the better truck and which one is going to be the better daily driver and mud truck on weekends and which one is stronger? i have a pretty good nack for raw hiding trucks and trust me if i could afford both i would

Id build the 89 using ithe parts from the 82.  Thats almost exactly what I did and I love the result.

What WT said. I'd build the 89. If you're worried bout the engine Just swap them. Although, I do like the style of the older 1st gen trucks better.

Id build the 82.  The first gen trucks are my favorite body style.  They have alot less crap on them.  Its already solid axle.  Use the trany and transfer case out of the 89, and put your 82 case on the back of it, and swap in the wider rear end out of the 89.  Then lift, lock, gear and go.   Thats just what I would do though.

If you were to combine them to build the 89 all you'd need to do in order to put dualls in it would be to pull the case out of the 82 bolt it to a Mco7 and slap it on the back of the reduction portion of the 89 case.  That way you would have the reduction be a forward shift and the 82 is a top shift aleady so there would be no coverting it over.  Its cake in all reality.  I was having regrets for not building my 81 further instead of building my 90, so I got a 83.  It was all in my head appearantly as I havent done a damned thing to it since I got it.

I recommend the 82, but I am biased since I drive an 81. I think the 89's look too "soft" And there is much less technology to go wrong, and it will especially if you love mud. Less is more with wheeling in my humble opinion. And he older trucks are tanks.

yeah, now i'm in that group cuz i just bought a 91 4x4.  then again, old yellow isn't going anywhere, i can just take my time building it she'll be wheelin' by memorial day 06...
