Checking in. Current project is 87 Toyota shortbox. Trying to figure out best place to mount steeering box, :help: and losing sleep wondering if I should keep or take out 3" body lift before box is mounted?  :hammer:  :hammer:  :hammer: Headed to tech area now. :burnout:

Thanks. Truck has toy rears in front, I'm just finishing hy-steer. Was also considering drivetrain lift. Truck definetly won't be daily driver. Once box etc. welded up I'll have to live with decision. That's why All stressed out now.  :hammerhead: lol.

I put a bunch of weight in engine bay till springs were pretty flat. Looks like no problem losing body lift. More leaves needed for springs though.

No bodylift.

Nice lookin rig
The body lift will have to be a personal call.
I have a 2inch Roger Brown body lift on my rig
and I'm going to cut it down to a 1inch.
I just needed a little more frame to weld on my nerfbars
so 2inches was to big  :yesnod:

Thanks for replies, pretty friendly place. :beerchug:  I was curious why body lift is so bad? I will be putting some kind of sliders on at later date. No idea what wheelwell clearance will be with motor and drivetrain installed? Might even have to go with 44044's? Sounds like allpro arms might hit spring? I would like to use 35-36" tires. Been searching archives and see I should mount steering box and pitman as high as possible. Looking more and more like flat pitman might work best? In next couple days I'll pull body lift and take some pics.

Not positive, but I think rear springs are stock? A local toyota had inboarded some chev springs, i thought that looked pretty good. I have to drill a hole in firewall for efi harness, holes for airflow meter and other stuff to convert to efi, put in steering box plates, reinforce frame etc., thought i would put motor in after that.

Not really in a panic to finish, but probably should be. I have a rusty 85 Xcab as donor once I do figure it out.  Keep ideas and suggestions coming.

Thanks,  Bob. :driving:

Body-lifts give you a higher body roll center and they can eventually break through the bottom of your cab since they tend to shift on them. That said I've only seen them break through when you jump your truck. I had them on my 4Runner but only a 2 inch, I have be thinking about doing it to my 80 if the 35's I want to get end up rubbing on my inside fender by the firewall. My plan would be as little as possible to clear, maybe and inch or so.

:welcome: toynorcal, I'll be drop'in by to check on your truck's progress every so often    I have an 85 pu also.

I found a good how to mount steering box/pitman thread on engine drivetrain suspension mods. Will call sky tomorrow about flat pitman.

Rocksurfer: Thanks, I will try and go with as little as possible. Guess it is an age old debate.

I dont remember reading what type of steering setup you are going to use, but if you are doing a cross over or high steer, I would only make one suggestion. Since you are looking for a flat arm, I am guessing you dont need much drop. If thats the case, nothing will beat the stock toy pitman arm. Most aftermarket buys are sleeved and will wear out quicker. Also look at what kind of angles your pitman arm will need to allow. Someone to talk to is (partsmike.com) he hooked me up with a drop pit from japan that gives better angle relief than aftermaket and no sleeve to wearout. Just Ideas bro.

I thought I needed flat pitman to get box as far forward as possible, plus helps keep pitman as high as possible. The kit is about 1 year old allpro, uses sleeved stock pitman. Truck sits pretty flat even with no drivetrain, and using rears up front. I will contact partsmike.com and see what he has to say. Thanks. the more info I can get on the subject the better.

Here's some pics of steering box/ pitman etc. Not sure if link will work?

I saw some posts you made on pirate http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=374962&page=2&pp=25 . Looks like you have everything lined out man. That brace is a good idea man, if you dont have it welded in there yet. Other than that, you should be strait. Just mount your box last and post pics!

Glad I waited to weld box brace. Chopped rad support, will have to do it again after removing bodylift. Now I don't think I needed to do it infirst place :shake: Oh well, having lots of fun anyways :hammerhead:

Removed bodylift and posted pic at top. Cab and box are pretty light. Don't know if overall center of gravity would be raised much at all with 3" bodylift? I'll weight front end tomorrow and get pic in better light. Maybe reinstall some bodylift

the 3 " BL  increases the leverage against your steering shaft, tcase shifter, stuff like that,  i would never go over 2 inch bodylift, 1 is better

UHMMM
the steering column is connected to the firewall. As for tcase and tranny You have lifted the floor 2"(for example) that makes your holes for tcase and tranny smalle thus making it hard to get full travel threw gearsr. You also stretch out the clutch line aswell

I spent yesterday re-hacking rad support after removing body lift. Actually took a while just to get cab squared up on 4 rear stock mounts. Maybe I will forget about body lift. Rockers are a little rustier than I thought, might tie sliders into them somehow. Found some fiberglass front fenders that are supposed to be flared 5". I asked if that was 5" more than stock, or where hewas measuring from. Waiting for his reply. I have a desert race box like ivan stewart used on his 85, might end up using it. If tires stick out further than fender in these parts it means vehicle inspection.
