5.38/5.29 gears
« on: Oct 02, 2002, 04:45:16 PM »
What do you guys think on running 5.38 front and 5.29 rear gears. I live in Colorado and I need to drive this thing on icy roads in 4wd. I know this is a big difference but maybe I can get away with it. What do you think? Anyone running this setup in their daily driver? On a side note, does Marlin make a lower 4 HI gear for a Toy T case, kind of like Land Rover's and Samuri's.

Thanks in advance.
Matt

There would need to be a large redesign of the box to fit a lower high rnge in the box. The high range uses non of the gears in the Tcase, see by the red line.

Poeple use 5.38 front w/ 5.29 rears all the time it is so little of a diff you would never know and if it really bothers you just air the rear tires down more then the front

are you locked up in the rear?If not Iwould just run the same size gears and air down.seems if you have different size gears if you spin tires it would pich in a funny direction. My buddy bought a blazer,it had different gears.took it in the mud and the back would track around the frond.went through the feilds sideways.I drove my runner with 25psi on the icy roads and open diff with no problem for years in montana back and fouth from missoula and kalispell.did really well with nonstudded and siped tires..

the truck would act strange with way different gears like 4.88s and 5.29s but with closer gears like 5.38s and 5.29s it should be ok and I say should because I have no personal experence with this just know that almost every guy with D44 runs this combo.
If you flat out dont feel right running this you could al ways 4.88 front and 4.88 rear.

yea,the only reason I say that is cause with ice,,Its tricky.I know some people taht do the same thing for mud bogging,,but the ice would bother me..One thing crawling around on rocks  and playing in mud ,but regular driving on ice,,Not me but hey, just a thought..
