W56C question
« on: May 28, 2005, 07:29:01 AM »
Would someone please tell me which shift rails the detent plugs are indicated in the pic.  The reason is that first gear pops out.  If I hold it in first and get going it stays in gear.  The shifter isn't touching anything and the boot is not installed so there is nothing bumping it out of gear.  Would the Marlin heavy duty detent spring and ball for the transfer case work in the transmission?  Any help besides rebuilding the tranny right now would be appreciated.

occording to the schematic that i have, spot "B" is where the 1-2 interlock pin is.
more likely than not, your syncros are failing and that is what is causing it to jump out of gear.
hold this. . .

A   interlock pin access plug

B  1/2 detent spring and ball

C  3/4 detent spring and ball

D  Rev/5 detent spring and ball

Our heavy duty t-case spring is the wrong size and length. I have seen washers installed behind the 6mm allen head plug but it is a waist of time.
The problem is not a weak spring.

Because all Toyota transmissions use helical cut gears, there will be always be side loades created.
Your worn transmission can no longer hold the side load and as a result, it is walking out of gear.
If you contuine to hold it in gear, the alumiun alloy 1/2 fork will fail.

You need to fix the problem, sorry, there is no cheap fix.

Common problems;
Begin by replacing the seat and socket :crossed:

Failed center mainshaft retainer plate
Worn bearing
Worn 1/2 fork
Worn 1/2 hub on thrust side

Thank you Marlin!!  I was afraid that would be your prognosis.  I have replaced the seat and socket with yours.  I just got the truck running after a 3RZ-fe swap and had the money saved for your rebuilt tranny.  A jeep backed into my Dad's car that he loaned me and it is going to cost me $2000.00 unless I can track him down.  I'll baby the tranny for now.  How many weeks are you backed up until you could ship one?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
