tie rods for cross over
« on: Mar 23, 2005, 09:30:14 PM »
i finally finished my axle rebuild  when i put the cross over on, i could not figure out how to get the cotter pin through the tie rod. i tightened the bolt till it would not move anymore and the hole for the pin is only halfway showing...do i need to keep tightening or what? another thing....when i was puting my manual hubs back on, i was tightening the bolts and torqing them to 18 (according to the FSM) and one of the bolts snapped inside the threads. how do i get it out? drill it carfully than remove the bolt threads or ddo i need to remove it all than weld it than redo it all?????

PS. the damn wheel studs at toyota cost 8 bucks a peice!!!!! i needed 12!!! thank god i have hookup sand get everything for half off otherwise i wouldnt know what to do!!!!

Just use an Easy-Out on that broken bolt.

Yes, that is what easy-outs are made for.

With our new tie rod ends you need to get them very tight before the pin will go in.

How tight have you torqued them?

Picture would be cool.

Is anything getting deformed from tightening them so much?

nothin is getting defored. the pic wont show the ridge or anyhting, its super small. i torqued them with all my might, (i didnt use the torque wrnch cause i couldnt even get them all the way in) im pretty strong also. i did it so tight it wouldnt move. i dont want to take my impact wrench to it.

i ended up takeing the tie rods back out and it had beed so tight it made a little lip with the metal so i CAREFULLY ground the lip away with an air dremel and it went in. PITA though!!
