« on: May 08, 2005, 08:55:12 AM »
ok  this guy i know has a 90 2wd that was a parts delivery truck,   according to the codes it has a G40 4speed and 3.07 R&P G662-axle code

the question is   can it be made into aG52-54 by adding the 5th gar  like on the L45 and L50-52

I think it'd be easier for him to find a w55 5spd that most of those trucks came with.

not all that wierd, carb was an option until at least '90 in 2wds in the US.

i had a G40 in my '84 pickup.  tightest shifting tranny i've ever driven, super slick, and had about 6" of shifter throw.  i'd put one in my 4x4 if i could find a way to put a t-case behind it -- i've found that bombing down the highway in 4th is much more comfortable than it was with my old u-joints(mine were shot so they had some nasty vibes at 60mph, i thought it had to do with my tranny before for some reason).  nice to be able to punch it and move rather than having to drop to 4th from 5th.

only real difference in the w50 would be where the shifter came through the floor.  That's what I replaced my 4spd with in the 81 2wd and it had a shorter shift throw.

i'm not sure about the '81 -- i'd like to say the L43 was gone after '80 but i'm hazy on 2wd trannies.  the G40 has a short straight stick, not bent like the L series
