good gas mileage
« on: Apr 25, 2005, 10:32:23 PM »
I usually keep pretty decent track of my gas mileage, and lately it's been an even bigger concern.  I always try and drive in a manner that will return good mileage (like an old lady), but have tried even harder the last couple of tanks.  Because of high gas prices I don't drive the 4by too often, but usually drive my 91 2wd.  Since purchasing it just over 2 years ago it has usually yielded 25 mpg, but I've been able to milk a little more out of it.  This last tank I got 27.47 mpg, which is the highest non trip mileage to date.  A little while back I bought some Bosch platinum +2 plugs and without driving any differently during that period I've been getting high 25 or 26 mpg.  I just found it kinda curious and wanted to share and see what kinda feedback or similarities others have.

what engine?  22re I assume?  I usually fill up right around 16gallons, and I get roughly 270 per tank.  I split pretty evenly highway and surface street, when I drive mostly surface its about 240-250, and all highway, I get about 280.  this is in a 3.0 5spd, 37"s, 5.29s, old spark plugs and wires.  I just changed my fuel filter, and I already have felt a power surge, so we'll see if it improves my economy or not.  Waffler has the same engine in a 4runner, with an auto, and he gets about 220-230, doing the same type of driving.

On a side note, I have noticed I have gotten a little better economy, when I go on camping trips, and wheelin for a few days.  Ive turned up as high as 328 :dunno:  driving a lot in 4hi, some low, with hubs locked

I have the 3.0 in my dd runner. I drive a 100 a day for work. I used to drive 70-75mph @ 18 mpg but since fuel is up(2.559per gal right now) I've slowed to 55-60mph and 20mpg. Not much to look at but it adds up over a years time. My 84 gets 13mpg, it's a 4bonger with a Holley 390, Downey hdr with no cat and a Slowmaster smuffler.

Yea, guess I forgot the engine, but it's a 22re w/182,000 miles.  And tocutter, how'd you mount that 390 carb, did you pick up an old holley manifold?  I did that a while back and dunno what truck I'm gonna run it on, plus I can't seem to find a decent holley 390 to buy, but will otherwise have a similar setup with either of my headers, no cat(alaska non-catylist truck) and magnaflow muffler.  In the 80 4by I have a weber 32/36 dgav, nameless 4 into 1 header and 2 cherry bombs and get 13-15 mpg, but it'll get better if I keep my foot out of it.  Keep em coming...

The carb was on the truck when I bought it from my cousin. Intake is an Offenhauser Kit from Northwest Off-road Specialties. It works great but it sucks the fuel like crazy. Luckily I only drive my rig around 2-3k miles a year. It drinks gas like I drink beer

Weird enough as this might sound, I get around 16-17 in town... when I go out on the freeway I get around 18-19 even at 70-80 with the throttle mashed. When I only go around 55-60 I only get about 1617. I have a 81 22r 214K 37s and 5.29s. Some people I know think my truck burns oil like crazy being on the gas on the freeway, but it doesnt lose much oil at all...

Its really really smooth and I can take my hands off the wheel (well have them above it) and it tracks straight. At about 88 MPH its about 3900RPM though. 80 MPH is just around 3500...

you get better mileage at that speed because a 22 is in its sweet spot between 3000 and 3600 rpms
