Best muffler for 22r?
« on: Jun 18, 2017, 07:46:33 PM »
I'm about to be putting my hybrid build into my pickup, and I'm looking for some input on some good mufflers that give a good deep sound.

Flowmaster 2 chamber or 3 chamber. I recommend the 3 chamber that's what I run.  :twocents:

I am using a hand me down Flowmaster 44 with an 18" resonator before the muffler.

The guy who gave it too me hated it because it was too loud for him but he ran it alone with no resonator. The resonator really takes the edge off though.  It has a mild drone at freeway speed if you are in it and a big one at about 2,100 rpm around town but it does sound deep and throaty.  Not too bad at all the other RPMs.

I ran one of the cheap stocker replacements and it went all loose inside after about a year.  If you go the stockish route get the walker or something on the more expensive end.  The construction quality is not there on the $22 ones.

I will say the hybrid seems to like free flowing exhaust.

I have also heard good things about the "coffin" mufflers.

That was me with the Walker Dynomax Super Turbo. Just recently put one on my Xtra cab truck.

I bought the biggest one they make (case size) for a 2.25" pipe.  The bigger the muffler case, the quieter the muffler (all else being equal) and this thing isn't really what you'd call quiet with no cat.

I run what the P/O put in, which is just a cheapie flow tech raptor with no cat. sounds kinda weak, is kinda weak....fits the truck :gap:

Mr. OVRAROK runs a 3rz w/ a coffin muffler. he has a rev limiter video which sounds amazing, but I don't want to speak for him or post his videos up :)

Thrush 17702, very compact, but a little loud with out a cat. I get about 8 years out of each one, then take it back for a free replacement.

Unless your "hybrid" includes a V8 keep it on the quiet end of things. I find the sound of most 22R and 22RE engines to be annoying and I don't see the point in being loud on the trails. Just my useless (worthless options have a TM I think) opinion.
