20R Oil Pump Play
« on: Feb 11, 2017, 05:17:47 AM »
Would you allow this much play between the Crankshaft Spline Collar and the Oil Pump Drive Gear in an engine rebuild?

Thanks.

HA!
I'll agree with that Gnarls. That photo is supposed to be a video. Maybe this link will make it work.

Hey Cavu2usf,

Here's a link to a short thread on Pirate.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/657631-22re-engine-rebuild-oil-pump-drive-spine-question.html

I'm not sure this will answer your question completely.  I don't recall mine being that loose.

Are the parts new or used?

I'd call Tod at engbldr or Jerry at 22RE Performance.

I don't think mine was that loose...

That being said, I can see it being lose; as the oil pump, not the crankshaft keeps the parts aligned..........  (you don't have to the oil pump exactly centered for it to work)

Gnarls.

That's an excellent thread Gnarls. Thanks; it answered my question.

Here's a comparison of my used and my new Spline Drive Collar.

Got it from LCE Performance, 40 bucks shipped. So, they can still be had.

There is still some play between it and the original Oil Pump Spline Drive Gear. Ordered a new Japanese Oil Pump this morning, hoping for even less after installation. Will post a video of it once all installed, for a Before and After comparison.

OMG  throw that drive spline in the scrap bin. its GONE.  you can easily have any machine shop cut a 22R single width chain drive spline to fit the 20R since the 20R spline is thinner than the 22 with the single width chain.

Hey Steve,

YES... the photo really shows how badly worn the spline gear is!!  :yikes:

Good job at doing your homework and being a excellent DIYer auto mechanic.

Thanks for the kind compliments Gnarls.  :beerchug:

That's the original part on the '80 20R. The truck I bought from a cabinet maker back in '93 for 2 grand, and it had around 240K miles on it then. 270K on it now, so that's the mileage on that spline collar.
I'll never sell this truck! :D

Good Morning folks.

The new Spline Collar really cut down the play between it and the Oil Pump Drive Gear. Wish I could show you the video but the damn Photobucket site won't download it (tried TWICE w/different vids) and I ain't wasting any more time on it!

I've decided to use the "old" Oil Pump and store/resell the new pump, as the compared play in the gears between the two isn't that much different.
This video shows Pump Gear play between a new pump (on the right) and the used pump (left).
http://vid1284.photobucket.com/albums/a576/cavu2usf1/Oil%20Pump%20Play%20Comparison_zpsm9sottqd.mp4

This image is of a visual comparison between the New and Used Oil Pumps.

I just feel the difference between the two isn't all that much. Besides, the used pump doesn't have more than 20K miles on it anyway.

So..... the engine assembly continues. Carb shop should have the carburetor rebuild done today, so I can get the Intake Section goin.

Measure everything you can think of now.

Later you can measure again to see how much wear you get...........
