86 runner will try to start with key off
« on: Nov 25, 2015, 11:41:25 PM »
I just swapped out my auto tranny for a 5 speed. when I went to start it up my battery was dead. so I decided to use the engine start selection on my battery charger. I turned the key over and it was turning over. then stopped. when I tried to do it again I had no power on the dash and no regular buzzer that you have while the key is in the on position. when I toggled the key back and forth to see if something would change.   with the key in the off position I can hear the motor trying to turn over still. since I didn't know what was going on I went to disconnect the battery cables and the battery was hot. I have checked all of my fuses. obviously I have a bad battery but would make the loss of power and then have the motor still turning over.

sounds like you have a short or some problems with your ignition switch

The amount of amperage draw you gave the electrical system when trying to start it with a dead battery probably popped an in line fuselink or something that you can't set your eyes on. Just look at a schematic and use an ohm meter to check continuity across the fuselinks.

I'm curious as to why your battery got hot...... that definitely isn't supposed to happen.....

Its probably because I was in denial that it was toast and tried charging it two different ways. then i put it in to see if the little charge it did have would start my truck. which it almost did. then I put it on the start up mode on the charger. more than likely that fried it completely.  i found the wiring diagram for it so i will go through it to see i can ohm my way through the system.  then see what happens with a new battery.... :dunno:

All batteries get hot when charging. Especially at a high amperage. If he was attempting to start the engine with a dead battery that had already been in the charger, and also had a charger set to let's say 200 amp start mode I would expect it to be hot.

This.  I used to have to charge quite a few a day for a large fleet of boats, and while many would get noticably warm, only those which had a bad cell got really hot.  Just my experience  :twocents:
