Cooling fan options
« on: Sep 15, 2015, 07:16:43 PM »
I just got my 20r rebuilt. It's running great, but I have a small electric fan on the radiator. In traffic the temp gets close to 230+
which concerns me. The shop said get the original fan and shroud, but what other options do I have? Two electric fans?

230* :yikes: that thing should run at 180-195 tops. I agree with the shop, go with the stock fan whenever possible.

Haha, Ok. I'm trying to track one down. I saw an LC engineering flex fan on ebay. Decent option?

Gotcha. I found a flex fan from LC Engeneering that's made for the 20/22r. And I may have found
a shroud.

Just a thought, but I have a brand new radiator. If it's not the fan or the cap, how do I tell if maybe the engine side itself isn't clogged or just gunked up?

How long does it run before it overheats? Personally I would prefer the factory fanclutch than a flex fan. That's just my opinion. As far as the engine side goes, pull the thermostat off and put a garden hose up top and flush the block. We have drained systems flushed with water. Fill with drain cleaner and water run for about 30 minutes flush 2 or 3 times and all was well.
If your engine has been ran with just water there is a good chance it hhas electrolysis buildup in the head.

I took it for a drive. While leaving my neighborhood, I noticed the temp gauge shoot way up then go down to 180 or so.. shoot up again then back to 180 where it stayed for a few minutes. It slowly got warmer and seemed to stay around 200 for a while. then with stop traffic and slow driving it went to 230. all within about 45 minutes.

Also I looked and my friend who convinced me to get rid of the "crappy clutch fan and shroud.." convinced me to buy a 12" UNIVERSAL SLIM FAN PUSH PULL ELECTRIC RADIATOR COOLING 12V 1730 CFM  no shroud on the fan.

If the block was clogged/gunked up, the over heating issue should be all the time, as the coolant flow would be always be restricted.  It sounds like yours is similar to the usual"fine on the highway, but over heats in town".  This is usually an airflow low engine speed water flow issue.

Did you have an over heating issues prior to the rebuild?  If not, start with usual suspects, i.e., old lower rad hose(collapses under suction), non Toyota t-stat, worn water pump, air pockets in the coolant.  I would start with those, then move on to the fan.

The up and down temp change could be due to air pockets in the coolant.  This LISLE ORATION LS24680 Complete Spill Free Funnel Kit, works great for burping the coolant system.

Those 12" 1730cfm fan, is/will be an issue, it is too small both in cfm and size.  The black magic ones are 3,000-3,300cfm 15" fans, and move a lot of air.   I have been running one on my 3.0 since '98, it cools very well, and the stock gauge is about 1/16" lower than where it used to sit with the stock fan.

Factory fort taurus fan is 2 speed and flows even more than the above. $120 at oreilly auto parts or about 20-50 at a wrecking yard. I still would prefer factory fan if you have access to one.

Just a warning from experience. If you buy a Flex Fan stay away from ANY water. I drove through a deep puddle quickly and bent the blades into my radiator. i will NEVER run one again. Just my experience

Thanks for all the info guys. I found factory thermo clutch fans on ebay. And someone on here is selling me a shroud. Now I have to see about air pockets in the cooling system.

I found our yesterday when servicing a relatives 80 that oreillys carries the fan clutch for something like $30. I put one on his and it seems to be fine.

Oh nice. I'll go check them out then. I still need the fan itself then haha
