If he's a friend, ask if you can take it for a trail ride. Shop I used to do business with was great, the owner let me load up 4 bikes when I was looking and take them out and ride them on some trails. I wouldn't buy unless you are comfortable riding it. What are some of the components on it?

It sounds like a good deal to me.  My buddy is just about your size an he rides a medium to large frame (18 in.-20 in.).   I believe the gt your interested in is an i-drive suspension which I believe to be very good.  My personal experience with mountain bikes is that it's better to have the frame size a little smaller than a little bigger.  You  can control a bike much better when it's a little smaller than a larger one.  Seat post height will tailor to a better fit.  If all else, test ride it, but for the price and if the condition is good, go for it!

Dont buy it.  I damn near tore my left leg off riding a GT XCR Le back a few years ago.  GT was bought by Pacific Bicycle co, yes the same guys who sell junk bikes at WAL-MART and don't honor the lifetime warranty of GT bikes purchased before 2002.

A lot of the bike you buy depends on your skill and the type of riding you do.  I don't recommennd it you downhill or jump alot.  Its perfect for trails with some harsh riding.  Any frame will break no matter how much it cost.  I've seen thousand dollar downhill frames crack break you name it.  You would be suprised to see pros race bikes like that with those parts. That bike is even good for dual slalom or mountain cross events.  I race bmx, slalom, mtn. cross and dirt jump my gt with the most abuse. For gravity runs my intense downhill bike rises to the occasion.
