Diff rebuild
« on: Jun 09, 2015, 10:32:39 AM »
I recently put an aussie locker in my 85 4 runner rear diff.  I'm ready to put it all back together but cannot get the ring gear back on the carrier.  The fit is so tight it just stops about 1/2" from the face of the carrier.  Tried heating the gear in the oven, using a press ... neither worked.  Last thing I can think of is to pull it on with longer bolts ... any thoughts?  Thanks!

Use a press with a couple pieces of aluminum. It must go on square.

You can also pound it on with a dead blow. Start easy, then wail on it pounding it in evenly

If you have access to longer bolts for all the holes you will be fine. But make sure it goes on square and evenly do not BIND the gear on the carrier. The bolts are fine thread you will not strip them unless you go ape :pokinit:

Make sure there are no burrs or dings holding you up. Dress it with a file. You can cut the heads off some extra ring gear bolts and use them as guide bolts. It will make sure your bolt holes are lined up when you finally get your ring gear on.

I have never had to beat a gear on. Heat it up and work it down evenly with the guide bolts and it should go on. Don't get it cocked or it wont go.

I tried it in the oven (assuming the oven = bbq) for 20-25 minutes and it didn't help at all.  Also went over the mating surface with a fine file.  I will check around for longer bolts to pull it on.  With a press or a dead blow it seems like it'd be real hard to get all the holes lined up nice

Got it on yall!  A couple C-clamps, pieces of wood and the bolts (once the gear was close enough) got the job done
