2001 tacoma
« on: Dec 20, 2014, 10:49:52 AM »
The front drive shaft spins when it is in 4wd but the light doesnt come on. It used to work every time I put it in 4wd drive. Now the light wont come on, and the 4wd wont engage. Thank you for the reply.

Does it have manual hubs?  If your front driveshaft is spinning and your hubs are locked it should be in in 4wd.  That doesn't mean that all four tires will spin.  Your front differential is open, so only one of your front tires will really do much work.  The light doesn't necessarily mean anything.  I haven't had a newer tacoma so I cant help much more than that.  sorry.

Is it a push button 4wd? I know usually the light only comes on when 4wd is engaged but how are you checking if it is or isn't engaged?

Thank you for the replies. It has vacuum hubs. I think I found the problem. I think the motor on the back of the front diff is burnt out. I appreciate the reads and the comments.

the light does mean something on stock trucks.  If the light is not on when engage in 4x4 then that means your vacuum is not on, when your vacuum is not on your 4x4 wont engage/work.

I found that out quickly when my uncle's 4x4 wont work after having a mechanic change out the tranny. mechanic decided to not change out the sensor from the old transmission and yet he left the wires hanging. 4x4 light didnt come on when shift into 4x4 driveline spins but not engage, so i decide to take a clip and jump the wires to make the 4x4 light on.  After doing so light came on and so the 4x4 worked.
