Timing
« on: Nov 07, 2014, 05:54:07 PM »
On a 1994 22re how's the best way to have distributor position on first start up after top end rebuild? I've read all the articles on how and where to point rotor to the number one piston. That's not what I'm asking. I want to know best position of distributor where the timing adjustment lockdown bolt is. Best all the way all the way top, which is counter clockwise, middle,or bottom, fully clockwise. Just wondering. Thanks for your time.

I would hand snug bolt, set in middle, and have timing light hooked up, so that once it fires you can set timing

Took lots of pics this time. But little did I know my phone crashed. Yep! With all my pics and info on it. So lol, where I had it is a good guess. That's why I'm asking.

The easiest and what would seem fool proof way to set the distributer is in the fsm, put the crank to 5deg. and set the distributer to where the 2 points (I don't know what they are called) are pointing at each other. Of coarse make sure the motor is on the right stroke and the rotor points toward #1. This should get it pretty close.

Don't you also have to put a jumper (paper clip) in that Lil black box when setting timing. Fsm! Fsm!

In the middle, that way you can adjust it either way.
From the FSM,
Set the timing at 5* BTD,
Looking at the rotor like a clock, place the rotor at 12,
Center the distributor adjustment opening over the bolt hole in the head,
When you slide the distributor into the head, the rotor should rotate counter clockwise and point at the vacuum port on the distributor.

My vacuum comes off my power steering pump. Don't have one on my distr. but will set accordingly.
