Camshaft question
« on: Jul 20, 2014, 08:16:29 AM »
I have a 94 22 re pickup 4wd. I have a highflow cat, glasspack and 2" piping from the cat back(not sure if this matters in choosing a cam). I am looking into a cam. I talked to engnbldr about the 261 and 268 cam. He thinks the 261 will be better for me. I daily drive the truck with some occasional offroading. I have 35" tires and 4.88 gears.

Who has the 261 cam and how do you like it? Also did anyone have to adjust there timing or set it back to where you had it with the stock cam?

try 22reperfomance.com
Ive bought 2 or 3 cams from him, and he custom grinds them for each application

I wasn't impressed with my 261 engnbldr cam. I'd go with an LCE cam or 22reperformance.

if i were to do another rebuild i would get a 22reperformance cam or non at all and stick with the stock one.

i have the 261 crawler cam in my 85 runner, i did retard my timing a bit to get it to idle better.

as for a notice increase in low-end torque, i cant explain that since the motor is fully rebuilt so compared to the last tired worn out one i have much more power.

I've been trying to figure out cams lately because I am doing a early 22r in my 4runner for a low tech carb build/swap.  The early stock 20r/22r cam is quite a bit different than the 22re cam.  It supposedly has a bit more intake lift, but the biggest difference is that the intake duration is quite a bit longer.  This creates increased manifold vaccuum from what I've read which is typically a good thing for a low end grunt 4 banger. From what I can tell this is more of an RV grind than the stock 22re grind.

I may not fully know what I'm talking about at this point but every early 22r I've ever driven and my daily driven '80 with a bone stock 20r sure pull hills WAY better than all the stock 22re trucks I have had and that is a fact. This is kind of radical thinking since it's using stock parts but I would consider tring to get ahold of one of these early 22r cams and see what it does.  You can probably get one for nearly free which is also a bonus.

As far as the carbed R series, I'd go with the "Outlaw" from LCE... that thing is a MONSTER!

That thing is crazy!  Has anybody actually ran it in a truck around here?

i say go with the one that will offer some more power and you can still smog it easy.

like i said i have the 261 and its not much over stock. but then again its just that and a ported head so the more add ons like header etc. maybe the more power u will see.

LCE pro torquer cam is a good choice. Put one in my built 22re for the runner and my buddy put one in his 87 pickup as well. Pulls nice and is not TOO much cam but still noticable with minor mods.

Also I rarely take it over 4000rpm if that matters in making a choice

Yes it is a noticeable use of torque through the power band. I install new rockers and valve adjusters for longevity and piece of mind with new cams.

How do you have your timing set? And valves adjusted at .008 and .012 warm?

All depends on the setup. My engine has a lot of work done to it, 10.5:1 compression, .040'' over, pro rocker shafts, dual springs, big valves, adjustable cam gear degree'd to spec, pro oil pump, handles over 8000rpm without a fuss. Not that I like to run those rpm's but it can take it.  I set the valves to .007 and .011 but its all personal preference.

Here is an update if anyone is wondering. Cam has been in for almost 1200 miles so far no issues. Left head in place when installed. I reused my headbolts ( just cleaned them up ) and rocker arms.  I am running factory timing, I am considering a slight advancement. Thoughts on this? Overall the cam has been preforming well.
