V6 axle swap no more brakes
« on: Jul 13, 2014, 11:34:54 PM »
So I just did a axle swap in my 82 pickup and know I don't have brakes. I sawed in a 97 4 runner rear axle with drum brakes. I bled the brakes till there was no more air and the petal is still really soft. I have to pump the brakes about 6 to 10 times to get a firm petal. I'm thinking maybe I need to put in the 4runner master cylinder in. Any info will help thanks.

Well the brakes are bigger than the ones from your pickup, but i don't know how much of an effect that would have on the pedal feel.  Are you sure the brakes all around are bled correctly?   Are the brake shoes adjusted properly?

did u bleed them in the proper order and the lspv as well?

it wouldnt be a bad idea to swap in the 4runner master as well, being that the drum brakes on the 97 rear are considerably bigger than the stock 82 rear drums and move alot more fluid.

I bled them from farthest to closest  to the master cylinder. I didn't bled the lspv I didn't realize it had a bleder. Thanks for the help. I was worried the master cylinder wasn't big enough but sounds like a bleeding problem. I'm working out of town and won't be able to fix it for a few weeks. I'll let u all know what I did to fix when I get back In town

Pedal will be softer with bigger brakes. When I did disc rears and v-6 front calipers I had a real soft pedal and on incline the pedal could touch the floor when I was applying lots if force. Bigger master (gm) made it worse, had to get dual diaphragm booster for things to even out. The gm master was 1" (?) and pedal was too firm and not stopping as well either. Unfortunately I don't think the dual diaphragm booster will fit due to steering interference on a '82.

Ok finally got in town and the brakes are properly adjusted and brakes are bleed. It still has a soft beadle. I'm going to see how hard it will be to put in the 4 runner ms in. I didn't see a bleeder on the load perporsening valve but I pumped it hella times

Ok the one I have know has abs I'll see in the morning if it fits. I'm going to have to replase everything because the 82 has has 4 bolts and the 4 runner only has 2
