Freshing up the 22re
« on: Jan 13, 2014, 07:16:44 PM »
I bought an 89 Toyota pickup 4x4 22re with the 5sp. It has around 190k on it and every once in awhile on start up it will knock for a second. Going thru the paper work that came with the truck it had the timing chain replaced at 177k. I'm pretty sure it's the tensioner that is knock. So while I'm in it what else should I replace? I'm thinking timing chain. Steel guides, oil pump, tensioner, water pump. It has the original head gasket and want to do that as well. So I was thinking of doing a valve job and maybe engr builders rv street head kit. But would like to know with the kit at $130 and then machine work done. If it would be worth it and how much does the head work usually run?

How cold out is it?

Could be piston slap.

My 22RE sounds like a diesel engine when it's cold out on first start of day for about a minute.........

Well it was 66 out today when I started it up, but when it's cold out and I leave work at 3am it's like 18-25 degrees outside and doesn't do it.

have you checked the valve clearance yet?

sounds like u got it all down on what should be replaced.

probably want to get new plugs, cap & rotor, plug wires and head bolts if you are replacing the head gasket because the stock ones are most likely stretched.

as for the valve job it really depends on where and who you take it to for how much its gonna run you.

ENGNBLDR has really good parts and knows his stuff.highly recommended

Yea the guy before I bought it had plugs, cap, rotor and wires done in July 2013 at the local Toyota dealership. I adjusted the valves this past weekend and it's still their. Only in warmer weather and not in the cold. Yes I planned on new head bolts as well. I would like to get 250k out of her before I do a full rebuild. I dd it 100 miles a day and it's pretty much stock, except for 31s and 4.56 gears.

rod bearings, easy fix. oil them when installing to help with the first dry start, you can even do mains without pulling the front case or trans, just use a tiny flat head and push them out, if its to tight gently pry the crank, make sure not to gouge or scratch the rod or mail journals., it always helps these little motors, let it idle for a few hours when done

Pull the oil pan and roll in new rod and main bearings, change the oil filter and fill it up with some quality 10w 30.

i just recently did a top end on my 86 (head cracked).

engnbldr came through with the parts/gaskets

got a new (stock) head from a local machine shop.  also i gasket matched the intake manifolds/exhaust manifold.  also ported out the bottom of the exhaust manifold, it doesn't feel any different but i figured i'd try  :gap:
