Gday! Southernmost member?
« on: Aug 31, 2011, 06:18:19 PM »
Gday!
I just bought myself a tidy 'first gen truck' as the North Americans would put it, or a 1981 RN46 Hilux as I would say down here in Australia. Unless we have some (very!)South American or Southern South Island New Zealanders I may well be the southernmost member here? I live in Hobart, which is the southernmost city in Australia's southernmost state.

Thought I'd drop in here to make use of what looks to be a friendly and useful knowledge base.

Right now the old girl is pretty much stock apart from wheels, 70's Toyota crown seats (knackered) and a poorly retrofitted RN25 heater box. Our 'gas' Aussie Hiluxs have 18R-Cs and 4 speed gearboxes exclusively which is a bit of a bummer but I will make do. Something else we seem to have gotten less of is rust :p.
Its what we called an SR-5, but alas its a bit of a misnomer due to the aforementioned lack of 5 speeds. Has a 4 gauge Tacho dash though. Stripes best as I can tell are a dealer fitted aftermarket item, we had SR5 stripes but they were considerably different to those in the states.

Plan is to tidy the body (read: new coat of factory colour paint) and interior and put most of it back to stock, fit some Recaro LXs I have, tickle the 18R-C a bit or fit an 18R-G, and go a little higher and wider.

Pics!

Didn't know Toyota still used 18Rs in 81   (would have thought at least a 20R)

Thanks guys!
Toe,we had 18R-Cs until the end of the first gens (1983), 2nd gen out here had 22R and 3Y... 18R-C is a hell of a lot better than a Y-motor at least!
Believe it or not we also got RK110 Stouts (RN46 type cab) which had a 5R until 83 or so too.

Cheers guys!
Got it out in the dirt on the weekend, nothing extreme but some fun nonetheless. Walked everything guys with twin locked BT50 Mazdas, later model turbo diesel Hiluxs etc were having multiple runs at, so I can't wait to see where it will go with 33s and a rear LSD (at least!).

Some pics, no extreme wheeling I'm afraid. Just climbed for an an hour or so up to the top of a 300ft waterfall, then descended back down to a big water storage dam and out.

Only hiccups were a numberplate coming loose (only had one screw in it) and getting the dizzy wet in one of the bigger holes (coughed my way up and out on 2 cylinders anyway!).So it seems pretty decent for a 30 year old, stock fourby!

So I can see deep wet stuff being an issue (waterproofing and lack of top end power) but in terms of idling up and over stuff it was very impressive.
