just bought my first toyota pickup
« on: Jun 27, 2012, 03:16:35 AM »
I bought a 1987 22re extended cab toyota pickup while i was on deployment for $2000. (had my wife pick it up) well i am home now and finally get to play around with it. So after some research and forum reading i quickly realized that Marlincrawler is an invaluable source of information when it comes to these trucks. I originally wanted a 2wd truck as i intended to use it for road trips and camping in a camper shell on the back.  Even though the fuel economy between 4x4 and 2x4 is minimal i was still convinced that i wanted a 2wd. The truck i bought is 2 wheel drive but when i finally saw it in person i realized that it was really a 4x4 truck with a 2wd transmission installed in it. everything up front was still in tact and in working order. (i have no idea why anyone would ever convert a 4x4 to 2wd but someone did) Anyways after doing some light off roading, and launching a small jet ski i started thinking really hard about getting a 4 wheel drive tranny back in there. Last week i unloaded some kayaks on the beach in some soft sand and eventually spun out and got stuck trying to come back up to the main road. I didnt get a run at it and i was barely stuck and it only took one guy to push and i was out, but at that moment i realized that there is no point having a 4x4 capable truck and not having 4 wheel drive. So I did some shopping (on a budget as i cant afford any fancy upgrades just yet) I bought a W56 tansmission off of craigslist then a top shift transfer case, forward drive shaft, and new rear drive shaft off of ebay. Also bought a complete gasket set and seals. So i pulled out the 2wd transmission and and rear drive shaft that was in there and started to get ready to connect the t case to the W56 when i realized it looked a little odd. After further research i realized that the craiglist seller sold me a L50 or L52 transmission from a 81-83 truck even though he swore it was a W56 (my own damn fault for not paying closer attention). So now my truck is just sitting in my driveway waiting until i find a fairly decent priced W56.

Well that is a little bit about me and my truck. If anyone has a W56 transmission in the San Diego area or up to 200 miles away and wants to sell or trade then please let me know. I will be posting in the parts wanted section after i have achieved my required amount of posts for being a new member. I also have the two transmissions that i mentioned earlier for sale. W55 or W56 2wd tranny and a L50 or L52 4x4 tranny its a 5 speed.
