t-case problem
« on: Aug 06, 2002, 05:30:09 PM »
alright guys,
my rear t-case (marlin dubble case setup) is having some serious issues right now, and i wanted some advice before i rip it out. the t-case pops out of gear (into neutral) when in 4-lo while compression braking. it is also extremely difficult to shift to 2wd (like all of my strength) and no rocking the vehicle or slipping clutch does not help. i know that there was a lot of water sitting in the case for at least 2-3 months during winter while it sat  (not sure how it got in-possibly through the shifter/ no roof and shitty tarp) till i changed the fluid. i think it might be bound up with rust or similar...i'm gonna try driving w/ some solvent in it for a bit then flushing it all out. I dunno, what do you fellas think?

thanks-
chris

Check your shift spring and detent ball.

I bet rust got into your spring rendering it 'non-springy' and it no longer puts pressure on the detent ball which keeps your lever in gear.

And about the shifting problem, It could be rust in with your shift rods making it difficult to slide around in there..

Regards,
BigMike

thanks mike, hey do i have to pull the t-case to get at the "shift spring and ball" i can hack as much sheetmetal as it takes  or i'll just pull the case today.  Another question: does the t-case fluid communicate with the transmission?

get a 6mm allen head for the two allen bolts on the sides of the tcase near the top. Take those out and get a magnet to grab the springs and the balls to inspect them. No need to pull the case for that but for what you posted I'd tear that bad boy down!

Follow my steps in my 4.7 gear install for the teardown. Basically just start removing everything till nothing is bolted together ;)

thx brandon, im gonna try the ball+springs deal friday.  i just need to fix the problem and build an x-member so I can hit the roundup next weekend  so im kinda strapped fer time (and money-but who isn't?) but ill get er done.  the truck doesn't even have to drive up there- ohv reg. so its a damn trailer queen (I have no trailer, oh well) well i'll get it up there if it kills me...it might.
