if it has the v6 it came with 4.88's more than likely.  look on the door jamb and see what the gear code is.   it will be a G244  G292, G144  something like that

I would say the really depends on what you want to do. Do you plan on putting larger tires on?  Are there already larger tires on it?  Trail rig only? Street driven?

Yes, the 31" tire package on 3.0's with auto's came with 4.88 gears.  The gear code is G144 for the 4.88's.

All auto transmission Trucks and Runners that came with factory 31's would have had the 4.88 gears, if 5-spd and factory 31's they had 4.56's.

With the auto trans you are pretty much limited to only one set of taller gears, the 5.29's.

Right now given you lack of trail experience, regearing would be a waste of money.  You really don't have a need to do anything to your rig past adding body armor and recovery gear.  After that wheel it for a year or two gaining the experience you will need to wheel a built rig.  The trail time will also give you an idea of the type of wheeling you like to do, and then either build your rig to fit your needs, or save up the money and buy a built one.  Given how cheap you can find basic built trail rigs, it really isn't worth spending the money building your own anymore.
