Need help quick...coil problem?
« on: Jan 30, 2005, 07:07:54 PM »
My truck died today :snare:

It happened instantly while driving down the highway, and then it started up again and happened again a few minutes later.  I wasn't getting any spark from the coil.  I tested the connection to the igniter and from there to the coil.  The brown wire right before the igniter (where the green connectors are) had 12 V, and the yellow had like .05V.  I thought that the yellow wire should be getting 12 V also.  It ultimately runs to the connection on the coil that has the 2 plugs.  So one of these 2 plug connections isn't getting voltage.  The chilton's says these are the resistor wires, so i am thinking that maybe the resistor is fried.  Does anyone know where this resistor is.  I tried to follow the yellow wire, but it is in a bunch of tape and conduit.  I saw a yellow wire that looked like it though going into the voltage regulator.

I need some help guys! what do you think?

I had that happen to me on 4dice.  Don't know if is the same casue.  But mine was one of the wires going to the coil.  It was loose and the truck kept dieing.  Plugged it in all the way and it hasn't happen since.

replace the ignitor.

oh yeah, forgot to mention.  I tested the primary and secondary resistances and they were good according to the book.  I guess tomorrow I will try to run a hot wire in place of that yellow one.  Both wires shoulld have 12 V right?  Then i will track down the end of that yellow wire.  Would just be nice to know where the end is (this resistor thing).

Had similar problem years ago truck would run fine and then die or drop out for no reason, My fix was a MSD Ignition setup with coil  it works with stock distributor. Made a graet improvement for starting and acceleration. Works on 22r or 20r Dont know about 22re.
