Not real familiar with the L43's, but usually when one will not shift into gear it is something on the inside.  Bad or broken syncros, gears, bearings, and shafts.   Usually equals a rebuild, or find a junk yard replacement (which usually doesn't last that long).   All of the G52's I broke were from one of the above problems.

I had this happen with my L52, bound up commuting home.
Larry at Yodaman pulled the top cover, and found the cause was a combination of my main bearing having died, and my third gear breaking up.
well, I've backpacked Fordyce, but I have yet to wheel it...

bogger is prob right on.  If it was working fine then all the sudden stopped shifting then most likely something broke inside.
If your close to nor cal area I have a L52 which shift great for sale.  Give me a 100 bucks and its yours.  Plus having a 5 speed makes a HUGE difference on the freeway.

I say go for it, a well-built L52 is a really good transmission.

L52 is the strongest of all the L5 series transmissions. It has a bigger input and output bearings then the L50 and L43 or L45 trans.

yeah.
Legend has it that with the right modifications, it has the potential to be the strongest mini truck tranny because of the straight-cut gears and cast-iron housing.

Then I would try and find a 5 speed out of a 83 1st gen truck.  Its the only year that came with that trans.

Well, if you're up for it, I could stand owning a spare.
