Aussie locker inner spacers required ?
« on: Oct 14, 2011, 06:20:32 PM »
I traded for a 4 cyl aussie locker and its missing the inner spacers.  The guy I got it off of says he installed it without them.  Here is a pic with the spacers im talking bout circled in red.
Did older aussies not come with these ?

If you can't convince them, confuse them.

I'm looking at the manual I got with mine. (14 pages) It's supposed to have those spacers installed. I don't know what would happen without them. What happened to the ones that come with your locker? I would try to get them. Call TorqMasters and talk to their tech people.

These lockers don't just slip in place and go. Some cases have to be ground or filed so it will fit. There are clearances to check also. That may be what the spacers are for?

Looking at the manual, I really don't know exactly what they do or how critical they are. You might be OK running without them? Your call.

The side gears spline to the axles with thrust washers maintaining end play. The cam gears Spline to the side gears on one side and locate on the pinion shaft on the other with pins and springs between both sides. Not sure what those spacers actually do.

If I got it for free or REAL cheap, I would try. IF it was a cheap diff I didn't mind grenading if I was wrong.

Let us know what you end up doing.

I believe those spacers are there to keep the alignment between the side cogs and inner cogs. Without them it would seem the inners could fall and come out of alignment with the side gears when they pop open when rounding a corner. I think I would want them in there. Maybe that's why the guy sold it because he left those out and it wasn't working the way it should have.  :dunno:

fordh8r, you may be right about that. The pinion shaft isn't realy going to keep anything in perfect alignment. Good call. Best bet is to call the tech dept and see if spacers are available.

Ya ford I have installed an aussie before and it had those spacers.  I was installing the locker for a friend and it didnt have them so I told him it has to have them.
They keep the out gears pinned to the carrier.  Without them the outer gears are loose and I am was very sure without them it would break pins very easy.

Thanks for all the input guys.
