« on: Jun 23, 2011, 02:23:08 PM »
I cant seem to find anywhere, can I put better front calipers on my 83 toyota pickup? Will a newer model year fit, with better braking power. I'm running 37"
Thanks

IFS Calipers from86-95 pickups,4runners are a great inprovement, especially turbo and v6 calipers, use these in conjunction with large vented rotors from a land cruiser, and your all set

i know some people are using tacoma set ups also, marlin sells brake packages to suit you needs

while your at it, look into getting a dual diaphram booster too.  it will make a night and day difference.

Where would I get a dual  diaphragm booster? Looking on Rockauto.com , I can get new calipers in those years for the same price as pick-n-pull. And new vented larger rotors stsrting at $10 bucks.

i might be wrong, but i think its only the 86-95 trucks with a 3.0L, and also the newer trucks like mentioned above.  i got mine from a 90 toyota 4x4 with a 3.0.

If you are going to do the larger brakes to help with braking do the lspv elimination as well it helps alot. I was having braking problems did the ifs brake conversion and it helped a little. Then I did the lspv swap and it helped alot, but I still wanted more so I just got the big bore master cylinder and brake booster. The rotors are fj60's, the calipers are off a 90-95 ifs taco or 4runner, and the master cylinder and booster are out of fj80.

What is lspv ?? Is that the porportioning valve??

Do the dual piston calipers work? Or only the single piston?

The dual piston one's work I have them on mine. The lspv is the porportioning valve in the rear of the vehicle you have to take that one out and put in an older one out of 84 and earlier toyota. It will bolt in same place as early model but bracket is a little different. Then you can adjust it to what ever setting you like I have mine at 50/50 and my brakes work great.

If you look under your master cylinder I believe that you should have it, but thats just what I got mine and my buddy got his off first gen toyota.

you should have one on your 83. My 83 had one and i wish i knew about this upgrade when i had mine. I now have ONLY this brake upgrade done on my 85 runner with 35s and i can stop on a dime. Now i really want to get the adjustable valve from summit so on steep down grades i can run 65 - 75% rear. (lifts a little in the back still.)

After 90 the calipers are the same for the 22r and the 3.0, same size pistons.

Front Range Offroad sell a bracket for using the larger calipers and rotors off a Tacoma and you also use the front wheel bearing hubs from an 86-95 IFS. That way you do not have to run wheel spacers for more width on the front. Makes it almost as wide as an IFS rear end.

I got my calipers off a 95 Pickup with a 22re.  The pistons are the same size as the V6 calipers, but these use the narrower 4 cyl rotors.
