« on: Apr 28, 2011, 08:41:03 AM »
So I was driving down the road in my 87 Toyota pickup 22RE with 147k on it and it starts to make a *clack* sound from under the valve cover...the oil is fine but it has been running rough the past few days...anyone know what the hell is wrong with my baby?? Any and ALL help is GREATLY appreciated!

Sounds like a broken timing chain guide.  Replace it before it wears a hole in your timing cover and leaks water into your oil.  Make sure you a new timing chain with steel guides.

Will check that out, thank you! Also as soon as it started doing that I pulled over and had my bro-in-law give me a tow since he's a repo man. Figured it would be best not to drive it at all.

BTW you can take off the valve cover and use a flash light to look down at the guides to see if ones broken.  Its gonna be the drivers side guide.
Good luck

You said "oil's fine", what does that mean? How's your oil pressure? Describe "running rough" a little better.

You didn't do anything to the truck before it started doing this?

The oil pressure and level is good, it takes a couple tries to start most the time, recently when it's idling (around 900-1000rpm) it runs like it's not at the proper rpm and when I rev it gets rougher between 1200-1500rpm then smooths out. And I haven't done anything but drive it.

Was the clacking steady? Matched rpms (sped up & slowed down with speed)? Seems like if it's not your chain, it's your valves, but I'm not sure what would make it happen so suddenly. Did you check all the valve clearances when you had the cover off?

It matched the rpms, didn't check the clearance when I had it off. I took out the last sparkplug and it was a bit corroded so I cleaned it off, put it back in and the engine ran smoother and the clacking was quieter...so today I'm getting new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and doing the timing. Also gonna go with a heavier oil next time I change it.

well theres only a couple things it could be 1. valve clearance 2.timing chain 3. spun cam guide, did u look at the cam to see if its scored or anything? a tune up might help it run better but isnt gonna stock a clack, when u say clack i say valves or chain, never know id change the guide and adjust valves before tune up. take a video of it running and post it.

Yeah, what you describe as a "clack" might not be the same as what people here are thinking. Maybe it's pinging? Anyway, if you can post a video with sound, that helps a lot.

Maybe it's a pinging? Or a knock? I don't know, the first word that comes to mind is clack, then again I haven't been around engines too much. I'll take a video and try to figure out how to post it today.

Forgot about this. I changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor yesterday (doing timing today) and the engine is running a lot stronger now but the sound is loud again like it was before.

Couldn't upload the video, it kept trying to upload it as a new topic or something and was taking forever.

It ended up being a lifter, changed the oil and put some engine restorer in and it's all better now. And because of all the stuff I did (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing, valves) it runs the best it ever has! Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.

22RE's dont have lifters bud.  If engine restore helped then I would have say its either a valve is adjusted to loose or a timing chain tensioner is not pushing out.  This is if you are sure its in the top end.  Very well could be the lower end.  Maybe even a bad bearing.

Hmm...then I guess I was misimformed...well for now it stopped and is running great so I guess I'll just keep an eye on it. Or is there something else I should do/look for specifically?

If your engine has "lifters" it is not a 22r, they do not have "lifters" -- Cam, Rocker Arms, and Valves. It was probably a stuck tensioner and the Restore loosened it up for now. There is no miracle fix in a can when it comes to engines.

It's a 22RE
Same difference cam, rocker arms, and valves.

Here is a picture of a 22r head, no lifters.
