Warn M8000
« on: Mar 01, 2011, 08:49:38 PM »
I didn't want to thread jack so here's mine:

I bought this winch to replace the SmittyBilt I had, just trying to assure myself that I made the right choice.
Thought about the Warn Tabor 9K, then said to myself, it's a Toyota...8k is plenty. Any feedbacks woulod be great.

I will tell you what you want to hear. You made the right choice. That is a great winch. Im just too cheap to spend alot on something i never really use

I'll also tell you a little unknown secret.....Warn's winches are severely underrated.

The smittybilt that I had before did great until I pulled a chevy 1500 at hollister, after that...it just wasn't the same anymore. The lever would disingage on it's own and the lever became sloppy. I was going get the MileMarker 10k but the guy said between SmittyBilt and MileMarker...he has more issues w/ mile marker.

That's true and I use think the same thing but this time I want to make sure the lever won't disengage while in action.

Great winch.  I've got the same one.  I've had a couple hard pulls on it with no issues.  Several wheeling buddies have M8000's as well with no issues.

I know that once I got my 8274 I used it for everything. I attached a block to the rafters in the shop and took a body off a pickup, hauled in a couple logs, I even righted a flopped forklift. You can do anything you can think of with a good winch.

Get a good one though cuz I had a harbor freight and lost reverse (power out).

I've got a Warn M8000 with amsteel synthetic rope. Used it many times in the past few months and am very happy with it. Simple and reliable. I had a POS harbor freight winch before. It was junk after using it a handful of times. Get the M8000 you won't regret it. Warn describes the Tabor as there values series, entry level winch. I don't like the sound of that.

The Tabor winch is designed as a light duty winch.  There is nothing wrong with them at all, just no practical use in the offroad industry IMO.  It was actually designed for the farmer in mind.
Build it right or get off the trail

Sorry for the late reply... i went with amsteel blue from customsplice.com. mainly because of good reviews and the great deal i got from them on pirate forums for rope/crush proof thimble/upgraded hook and rock sleeve.

thanks for the reply, I'm thinking about ripping out my cable and replace it with synthetic rope.

I love mine.  I have been around the smittybuilt and the mile markers and they all seem to crap out with a little abuse, at least the ones I've been around, but my warn is still running like new after 7 years.

I do know some guys have good success with the cheaper winches but I would rather buy it once and be done with it.
