speedo problems
« on: Feb 26, 2011, 09:54:42 AM »
My speedo all the sudden quit working the other day. crawled underneath and its connected good at the tcase/tranny. I havent pulled the dash apart yet to take a look. Has this happened to to anybody else? (86 pickup)

Take it loose at the tcase end and have someone in the cab, spin the cable and see if the needle moves.  If it doesn't move then the cable broke or your speedo broke where the cable goes in.
Build it right or get off the trail

The speedo on the tcase still spins when the cable is off. I havent spun the actual speedo cable to see if it makes the needle on the gauges move yet. So whats the possiblility of it having to do with the gauge cluster?

Take off the cluster then spin the cable, that way you'll know if your cable is good or bad. If your cable spins on both ends then it's your speedo that took a dump.

Gear inside could be bad.

ok. well i spun the end of the cable that goes into the transfer case with a drill and the speedo didnt move. does that mean my cable is bad or my gauge cluster is bad?

could be either still ive seen the cable just "pop" off the back of the cluster as well you need to pull the cluster out to see what your problem it if you pull it out and the cable is still securely attached you will need to replace either the cluster or the cable it you have someone spin the cable under the truck with a drill and watch it in the truck and it spins then your cluster is bad if both ends do not spin you have a break in the cable somewhere and need a new cabel
