Pinzgauer
« on: Dec 10, 2010, 05:53:33 PM »
Hey, I just joined this site after 4wheelin with a member from here in red bluff.
I like all the built up yotas and stuff but one of my dream vehicles of all time is the pinzgauer.
Searched here for any mentions, no hits.
Just thought Id throw it out there. The drive-line is really burly and with on demand 4wheel and lockers all around for less than most new vehicles? How can you go wrong?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqhwEgudlKg Heres the first of three video series from the factory, old and corny but a good overview.

They don't have very good articulation but the ground clearance is massive.

I know this site is more focused towards crawling, but I'm a local and I'm savin my pennies.

I've driven one. It's different but WAY cool!

Front and rear driveline disconnects. Manual lockers front and rear. Low gears. Torque for days. And the driveline is inside the frame.

really? I did not know that you could send power only to the fronts. Is it a different lever? The only ones i am familliar with are the 3 in the dash, 4wheel on/off, front lock, rear lock.

Big rocks? Not very well, articulation sucks.
Open country is its strong point. Watch some youtoobs, tons of them out there.

I may be mistaken on the rear driveline disconnect but I was certain it had one :dunno:

I have not seen one in the rocks but like Max said, no flex. And they are heavy.

Get ready for throwing some hard cash at em. On my vacation to hawaii they had a pinzgauer tour of a huge ranch (really pretty). Worked good for muddy trails and stuff. I talked to their full time mechanic about the reliability, says that almost every other week they will break down. Just a heads up

I rode in the 6x6 model too.

theres a 4x4 one that drives around town all the time here, looks pretty sick and the clearance looking at these things is amazing!

My stepdad was considering a Pinz and took it for a test run in the snow, the capability doesn't even come close to a Toy crawler or Unimog. Still a very cool vehicle but like everything else has it's limitations.
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
 Marlin 1200LB clutch

 no substitute for 4wheel drive.

Those are some cool videos. After watching those i have to say those things are pretty impressive for their day. I like the engineering that went into them. Its funny how back then they where bragging about how their vehicle wont crumple in a 50mph head on crash and these days everybody is making their cars to fold in. I still prefer a unimog as the ultimate expedition rig though.
