« on: Feb 02, 2011, 06:00:58 PM »
Help Please. I was wondering any body have a method of removing 22re cylinder head off. This will be my first time doing a 22re. I need to change my head gasket, for some reason i'm loosing water in my radiator but the motor oil is fine, no milky look and it looks like it's leaking on the side of the exhaust manifold. any help is appreciated!

please if possible step by step and if torque on the head studs. thank you

drain coolant
remove neg batt cable
take a picture of hoses and label them
remove egr from back of upper intake 2- 12mm bolts
remove the six bolts holding the upper intake on  12mm socket
remove fuel hose from lower intake and fuel rail  22mm on forward end of intake or 17mm at fuel filter above starter
remove lower intake from side of head.

depending on emissions equipment you may have to remove some junk from below the lower intake.  one of which is bolted to the rear of the lower intake and once removed can be tossed in the trash if you dont require smogging in your area.

remove the 12mm bolt holding the distributor to the side of the head along with all the spark plug wires

once the distributor is removed you can remove the 3 - 14mm bolts from the bracket holding the pwr steering to the side of the head. along with the one bolt in front of the head.

now you should be left with the exhaust manifold,  remove all the bolts from the exhaust manifold and the bracket (if equipped) from the bell housing that supports the exhaust pipe.  the manifold should have enough movement in it to set it out of the way.

now remove the valve cover,  I always use it to hold the head bolts :p

but first remove the 19mm bolt in the end of the cam shaft, Ive found a 19mm box end wrench and a hammer work best.  once that bolt is removed you can remove the distributor drive gear from the end of the camshaft, and remove the 12mm bolt thats in the pool of oil directly under it.

then start breaking the headbolts loose from the front 2, then back 2 then ... just move to the middle getting them broke loose.
once they are all broken loose (1 full turn) you can start removing them and putting them aside.
