is it the side shifting L43 4 speed that has the alum bell housing or the all cast iron L45 4 speed?
if the l43  it has a 3.64:1 1st gear  the L45 and most toyota 5 speeds have a 3.93:1

Well, my L43 just grenaded yarding logs and I am swaping in an L52 5 speed I had laying around...  I really didn't mind the 4 speed up untill then and I've hacked on alot of 5 speeds that way without any problems so I guess they are weaker like everybody says.  If you have a 4 speed just run it untill it takes a crap and put in a 5 speed.

i had on ein my 80's   i loved it . even  did the freeway ? frm time to time .  i wish that i had the 5-speed  for that but i was happy for the 4-speed  in the woods  for the lower gear set . in it .
