Just rebuilt the motor, I've never done this before but I followed all directions (yes it's top dead center). It turns over fine and sounds good, but it backfires through the intake hose. It doesn't seem like it's getting gas, so I have to spray starter fluid in the intake and then when I go to start it it backfires through the intake. Is this just because I used starter fluid, maybe the fuel pump is bad?? I don't know the history on the truck, so it could be that. Any other suggestions?

was the distributor properly aligned when installed? sounds like a timing issure to me.

Are you sure you had it on TDC, were both valves closed? It sounds like to me you had it 180 out. For every one turn of the crank the cam turns 1/2 turn, hence why it is called a 4-stroke engine.
