he was doing a oil change on his o7 camry yesterday. drained the oil, just loosened the oil filter to drain that completly before he pulled it off. got side tracked filled the car with 6 qts of fresh oil forget about the loose oil filter and started the motor to cycle new oil. walked away and oil began pouring out the loose filter obviously. motor started clacking he said it (clacked probly 8 times before he got the motor shut off) drained every bit of oil but 1/2 quart. cleaned his mess up changed and tightned the new filter and added freash oil a 2nds time motor sounds ok would anyone think theres damage done

It is hard to say if he did any damage to it, only time will tell.  Since it sounds fine right now he is likely going to be ok, may have only reduced a few 1000 miles off of the engines longevity.  If he is really concerned, he could always trade it now before any issues arise.

It doesn't take long to damage once there is no oil in the engine, the residual oil may protect it for a little bit so it is hard to say. At this point if everything is the same as before then chances are it will be fine. If any new and unusual sounds are now present then failure is in his future. Something has been damaged. When I used to train people, never ever leave anything loose, either take it off or tighten it but never leave it loose. One of my pet peeves there, I've seen more techs forget and leave it loose and have oil everywhere.
