Black smoke on start up, haten it!
« on: Oct 02, 2009, 09:40:56 AM »
The temps are getting a little cooler in AZ now. It's not 100 degrees in the am anymore. So, now when I start up in the morning I get a of black smoke and rich fuel smell, runs rough untill it warms up. Is there a way to adjust the choke so not so much fuel is being dumped in the morning?

yes, theres 3 small screws that holds the choke mechanism to the carb, remove the air cleaner so you can get to it, then watch the choke, it should be closed at start up (after you press the throttle  once) after that it should open slowly as it heats up from the electrical circuit, once warm the choke should be completely open if its not , then make it that way

The choke is working fine. I noticed that fuel is just dumping in when it's cold, all of the way up intil it gets to operating temp, then it smooths out like no other most of the time. A few times and getting worse, I'll have to turn the ignition off and re-start it. Then it runs normal. It seems as if their might be a temp sensor going bad. Like it's not telling the fuel cold run fuel cut solonoid to stop dumping so much fuel down the throat. What cha thinkin?

I forgot to add that the exhaust stinks like a badd ddog when this is happening. Lotsa sulfur smell. As soon as I shut it off, after it's at operating temp, the smell, the black smoke, the misfireing from all of that fuel, and loss of power goes away.

But, why all of the other symptoms? Especially when everything goes to normal after warm up? The cat is only 2 month old from Daves Performance.

Well, this is what I did. I unplugged the green connector that goes to the automatic choke before it's 1st start up. It runs just as smooth as it used to. I plug it back in, I hear a solonoid on the carb click and then it runs like crap, starts dumping all kinds of black smoke and bad smell out the tailpipe. I unplug it and it runs fine, smell goes away. I take it down the road  and the 1st stop sign I come to it dies. I plug it back in and I just run it down the freeway as usual. It gets up to operating temp and all is fine. Any new ideas yet?

"Big Pappa" :Do you have the stock carb ? The guy at Napa said his book showed 2 or 3 solenoid for that year ! So what I did is took mine out went to pick a part and took a few from some cars with 22r motors tested them and put it back in !! It wont take much to plug your cat  bad sensor bad solenoid = bad cat

I copied and pasted your response here since it might help someone else out with the same problem. I CAN hear the solonoid click on and off when I unplug it when it's cold. So, that means it's working right?

Is your choke adjusted too tight?

Is your choke adjusted too tight?

I've never touched it. This condition just happended one day. It all has to do with something temperature wise.

Still trying to figure this one out. Does anyone have a diagram of how the carb (fuel delivery) works when cold? I've changed my mind a little about ruling out the choke. The reason I say a little is that the choke flap stays open whether the temp is cold or hot. There's gotta be something in the carb that is opening to dump all of that raw fuel into the throat with out closing the choke butterfly. OR, I may be out there a bit on this theory so here it goes: Could it not be a fuel delivery issue and maybe an ignition problem(only when cold) ???? When cold, something is retarding the timming so much that it will not fire correctly???  I'm just reaching thats all.....

I've never gone through the carburator so who knows, maybe a freshen up (rebuild) may help? Anyone recommend a good kit and who to buy from? It's a stocker with all of the best of california smog crap all over it.

I wish I had some words of wisdom for you Rob!  I know I have a Weber and it works great when it's cold out but still has a horrible stumble at part throttle.  If I could have used the stock carb without all the darn hoses I would have been better off.  Oh well.  I'll keep my eye out for info, the only thing I can tell you is that LCE sells smog legal carbs but they are $$$.  Still, it would be new.
