from the question it sounds like the guy moved his axle too far forward to have the stock steering box location work out alright

Not that I build my steerring setups like that, but it will be fine.  You have to stop and think about how the front axle moves.  When the suspension compress's the axle moves back so it will be fine, and actually probobly have less bumpsteer that by having the draglink the same amount in front of the tie rod.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

No, it just depends on how far forward you move your axle. If you don't move it forward at all then you don't need to move your box.  But you won't hit the firewall with your tires of you move your axle forward.

Edit:  I looked at the picture.  it looks like he did move it as far forawrd as he could without taking out part of the front radiator support.  He could have cut out a part and moved his box father forward.  It also looks like the box is slanted at a big angle.  If he put it more straight it wouldn't be that bad.  I would be surprised if his tierod doesn't hit his drag link.  my steering arm hits my tie rod and they are perfectly lined up with the drag link infront of the tie rod.

I moved mine far enough forward to accomidate moving my axle 4" forward so that my tie rod will be at 90 perpendicular to the frame and not interfear with my drag link my pick is still to big but I had to cut my body mount, inner fender, and radiator mount to get it to fit and I mounted it lower and motre parallel so that it wouldn't hit my frame like the last one. And that being a 90 that is probably the stock box mount.
Sounds like more tree huggin hippie bull :pokinit:

That box looks like it is in the stock location. No extra holes drilled in the frame, stock mounting brackets, no frame plating, etc. Not all SAS turn out this way. It's common for set-ups using rears upfront, or people who move their front hangers forward. I agree with WT that the mechanics of how an axle works might save the guys rods under compression, but I wouldn't bet on it. I would probably still move the box forward, or atleast cycle the suspension to make sure it was going to be ok. This is also only an issue with using Highsteer. With normal crossover steering, the tirod sits under the leaf springs. If you are contacting your tierod and draglink with a standard style of crossover, placement of box is gonna be the least of your worries.
