Its a heavy engine compared to a 22r or 22re.
I work a 2000 BMW 540i 6 speed

Seen quite a few do it, someone on yotatech's 3.4 forum just started another. I think it is more an issue of carb vs fuel injection tanks and various other wiring issues. It is much harder to finnd wiring diagrams for anything pre 1989 because they are not online. You also have to deal with a new trans, R150f, motor mounts and all the various emissions equipment.

But it has been done.

I'm currently doing a 3.4 into an 85 (originally 22R then hacked 350sbc). The wiring is a pretty big challenge, much more so than swapping one into something that had the 3.0. It almost deterred me, I'm sure it's a deciding factor for many.

the worst part is adapting your transfercase to your front axle. if you can find a 3rz and the manual bellhousing to go with it could save you $500. that's the trouble i'm having swapping a toyota front axle under my v6 tacoma. it's gonna cost me $510 just to run a bone stock gear drive transfercase. if i want any gear reduction it's either $450 for 4.7's, or $510 for dual 2.28 cases.

it would cost less to just swap a R150f in and adapt that to a geardriven tcase

I have a 3.4 in my 84 and it's pretty tight front to back, my fan is about an inch off the radiator.  I think the first gens are a couple inches shorter in that direction, you may have to run an electric fan.  For mounts I used the stock tacoma frame mounts and choped about 1" off each one then just welded them to my frame.  I don't know what you would do for a tank & keep it smog legal here in CA.  I'm using a second gen FI tank with the V6 pump.

Allot of people say the power gains over the 3rz aren't worth the extra weight, that may be, but it sure does run   :burnout:

?

an R150f is stock behind the 3.4l 5vz-fe. you still have to buy a $350 adapter from the transmission (R150f) to a passenger drop case (R1A gear drive case), and a $159 23 spline input gear for said case (because the transmission output is 23 spline.

well the r150f's that came behind the 3.0l had a passenger drop chain drive transfercase. which i actually have a line on one and i plan to run it until i can afford duals or a 4.7 gear drive case.

it's cheaper yes, but you can't get any gear reduction for that unless you buy a $350 adapter to a gear drive case.
