bad steering box steering arm angle? (WITH PICTURES)
« on: Mar 12, 2010, 10:27:12 AM »
trying to decide if my angle of my steering box to my steering arm is a good angle or not, or if i need to rotate it closer to 90*. its in its stock location with the drop pitman arm that comes with the Marlin kit. What do you guys think

this first one is mine, the second picture is what im thinking about doing...

you need to move the box forward but no as drastically as the bottom pic,  somewhere in between the two

hmm either look fine. does it bind when you flex? are your tie rod and Drag link parallel? if so i'd say leave it. but if not move it forward a bit. and also think about plating the frame anyways for the added strength.

parallel is the key to the draglink and tie rod.  adjust the box accordingly

they dont bind or any thing when flexing. I am just wondering if its putting to much stress on the output shaft on the steering box because last week the out put shaft sheered off after slid off the road and hit a mountain doing about 15mph. i dont know? but heer are some pics...

i think it looks fine to me. but like i said maybe buy the marlin box plate and beef up that frame. or fab one out of 1/4" steel.. it will help stabilize that box.

when i did my sas 2 years ago all i had to weld with was a little 220 miller wire welder. The welds look decent and have heald up so for but Im thinkin of going back and cleaning up the welds a little and going back in with dualshieild or 7018 them up for somthing to do in Welding school. Just for piece of mind since i know im a much better welder now.

I am just wondering if its putting to much stress on the output shaft on the steering box because last week the out put shaft sheered off after slid off the road and hit a mountain doing about 15mph.

Hydro assist will help relieve that stress on the steering box output.  Your TR/DL angles look fine, I wouldn't move the box.

I'd move it forward at least 1 inch possibly 2 and definitely get a steering box mount kit or plate the frame!!! I ran mine in the stock location for a while without plating and I ripped the steering box right off the frame!  :twocents:

x2 just helped my buddy patch a crack in his frame on the inside of the box that was at least 3in long. and ripped the top bolt mount through the frame. we are going to plate it soon. now he sees why that should have been done.
