brake booster?
« on: Feb 18, 2010, 04:59:36 PM »
im trying to fix a couple small things on my DD. its a 88 4runner. i feel like i have to us excess pressure to stop sometimes. i read through my Chiltons and checked it how it said. when i hold the pedel down and then start the truck i can feel it kick in. but i almost rear endded a car last time i drove it. i was all the way on the pedel w/ my  :moon: out of the seat and the tires were barely locking up. plus my girl might be driving this soon. so does this sound like its the booster? and what years can i get one out of?   thanks

sounds like air in the lines to me. bleed the brakes and recheck. also pump the brakes and hold the peddle down. if the peddle starts to drift down its got a bad master cylinder. if the brake peddle is firm and does not drift down its one of a few things. you have a caliper hanging up so the pads are not applying pressure to the rotor a pinched hard line or swollen rubber line or a bad booster. the best way to go about it is to removed the tires and have someone press on the peddle watch to make sure that the pads are moving and the rear shoes grab. also check to make sure that you didnt have a spring on the rear drums break. if that were to happen you would only be getting front brakes and this would make it hard to stop. if you can give me somemore info i can help you somemore.

If you suspect a weak booster then use a vacuum gauge to how hard its pulling manifold pressure. If its a 22re then any where from 15-18 manifold psi is great without hitting the brakes.  Then check and see what psi it pulls with engine running and brake pedal pushed in.
